"Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living"
by Robert and Brenda Vale, reveals that dogs are worse for the environment than SUVs.

According to the Vales' research, a medium-sized dog has twice the impact of driving a luxury SUV 10,000 miles.

"Basically dogs are bad for the environment because they are large carnivores, so it takes a lot of land to provide their foods," says Robert Vale. So what can we do to change Fido's carbon paw print?

  • Feed your dog chicken or rabbit based kibble. These meats have a lower impact on the planet than beef.
  • Feed your dog food produced locally. Less travel means less resources used to get it to your pet store of choice.
  • Make your dogs food at home. This may be a daunting task every day, however substituting just one meal each day of home made dog fare will decrease your pets impact. This change will improve your dogs health too.
  • Pick up all dog poop with biodegradable bags. DO NOT leave waste outside to contaminate our streams, lakes, and rivers.
