Runts Deserve Love Too!

When shopping for a new family pet, consumers may have conflicting information regarding purchasing the "runt of the litter". There are several reasons why dogs receive the runt title. Most commonly the smallest and/or weakest dog born to a litter is termed the runt. This smaller stature could be due to several reasons.
1. The dog did not receive as much nutrition from their mother's milk post birth.
2. Female dogs can conceive for several days. The runt may be a few days younger than the other dogs, causing a smaller size.
3. As with humans, some puppies are simply smaller than their siblings due to genetics. This is especially common in mixed breed puppies. One pup may take after their larger breed father while another lends itself more to their mothers smaller stature for example.

More serious medical factors may be at play, which is why a veterinarians exam is always recommended for all pups in a litter. However, runts have a great chance of really thriving as healthy, happy dogs if given the right nutrition, exercise, and of course love. "Lightning was the first to leave the whelping box, the first to nip at the breeders toes, and jumps into trees to get the neighborhood squirrells", proud mom Cathie boasts. At 50 lbs Lightning is 10-12 pounds lighter than her three Curly housemates, however her personality does not reflect this size inferiority. The runt you decide to purchase may surprise you as well.

Why Do Dogs Sniff Each Others Butts? A Navajo "Tail"

On a recent trip to a Navajo reservation in Sedona, Arizona Navajo Nation member Jimmy "Smoke" shared this story with me...Enjoy!

Long ago, Dog and Coyote held a counsel each year. All important canine topics were discussed at this annual meeting. Each animal would make the trip to the land where counsel was held, and one by one they waited on the long line to enter through one singular door. At one important counsel it was decided to give each member their own door to prevent such long lines. Both Dog and Coyote were happy.

At the next counsel Dog and Coyote entered each door, but before entering Dog removed its tail and hung it outside their door for two good reasons:
1. To remember which door belongs to which Dog
2. To sit confortably during the long counsel
As a joke, Dog nailed Coyotes door shut, preventing him from entering the meeting. Coyote sat and thought of a way to get back at Dog for his trick. So, Coyote went door to door switching the tails on all of Dog's doors. When counsel was finished Dog exited, and immediatly put on the tail that hung on their door. Dog sensed something was wrong right away. Dog sniffed and sniffed and quickly realized the tail hung on their door was not his own! And so, Coyote sat and laughed, watching Dog go from rear end to rear end sniffing furiously to find their lost tail!

Pups Go Bananas For Bananas

Small bite size homemade banana treats are a big hit with these pups!

Ingredients:

2 cups flour (whole wheat flour preferred)
1/2 cup dry nonfat milk
1 beef bouillon cube
1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
1 egg
1/2 cup water -- hot
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup mashed ripe banana

Instructions:

Pre-heat oven to 300 degrees.

In a bowl, mix dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients. Mix until will blended.

On a floured surface, knead mixture for at least two minutes.
Use a rolling pin to roll out to 1/4 " thickness. Use a two to three inch cookie cutter or make your own designs. Place banana dough on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 30 minutes. Let cool and serve to your pooch.

Ingredients

3 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
1/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 large egg
3/4 cup fresh beef, pork, lamb, or chicken drippings
2 cookie sheets or baking trays

This little one loves home made dog cigars!

Directions

1. Preheat oven at 350 F
2. Whisk the flour and dry milk
3. Using 2 knives, add the shortening until the mixture resembles a fine meal
4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg then add the meat drippings
5. Combine the 2 mixtures in a large bowl and blend until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl
6. Flour the baking trays, and break the dough into cigar shaped logs
7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or are a light golden brown

All of this barking and yapping catches ROE's leader Rider's attention. "What are you two talking about?" Rider asked. "You mean you don't know what Earth Day is?" asked POE. "How can you be MY special person and not know what Earth Day is?" ROE exclaimed. "Don't you know what our names stand for?" said POE. Rider thought about it, and thought about it some more and said, "Your names are ROE and POE, what do you mean stand for?" POE smiled at ROE and proudly replied, "Respect Our Earth is R.O.E, and Protect Our Earth is P.O.E.! Do You Walk Your Dog or Does Your Dog Walk You?

The importance of daily dog walks cannot be truly understood until one sees it first hand. From high energy breeds like Jack Russells and Boxers to lower maintenance dogs like Great Danes and Mastiffs, a daily dog walk is natures Puppy Prozac.

Simply walking the dog each day is not enough to ensure discpline throughout all other activities however. The most effective training tool available is a dog that is walked properly by their leader. Read on to find out how and why.

According to a 2006 Hartz poll about two thirds of dog owners exercise with their dogs daily. You have seen some of the two thirds, walking straight armed down your street while Fido leads proudly, darting from one side of the sidewalk to the other. This type of people, not puppy walking is reinforcing negative behavior and dominance in the pet leading. Dogs are migratory animals in need of daily exercise, but they are also pack animals who appreciate a calm leader.

First choose a collar and leash that works best for your animal. Martingale collars are known as the humane choke collar for the dog who pulls. Choose a leash length that will keep the dog right next to you. A 3 foot long leash should do it. Second choose a time frame that works best to keep the leader calm and relaxed. Depending on the breed and daily schedule, 30 minutes to 1 hour should be enough time. Crated animals may need more exercise than dogs left to roam in a large yard while Mom and Dad are away, for example.

Now you are ready to walk. If you are physically able start the exercise off with a jog to get out the initial excitment the pet may have. Again keep the dog right next to you at all times by giving a quick pull then release motion. A tight collar for the duration of the walk due to excess pulling can cause the animal to chafe or even worse, choke. If your dog pulls excessively walk him until tired, then discipline with the quick pull then release motion and reward with a treat of their choice. The pulling will get better with practice and with an exercise routine implemented.

By adhering to the above every day, you will enjoy your place as leader of your pack. PS. A few pounds will drop off as well!

Eye Contact Training With Your Dog

Making eye contact with your dog is one of the fundamental lessons toward a well trained animal. A pet that understands the non verbal cue of eye contact from leader to dog will listen to instruction more quickly, even when highly stimulated outdoors. Follow the below steps until your dog responds to your glances.

Choose a reward that works for your pet. This can be affection, treats, or "click" training. The more the pet desires the reward, the quicker they will respond.
Make sure your dog is on a leash. The leashed pet will respond to your role as leader easier.
Hold the reward close to your eyes. Call your dogs name and respond with the reward as soon as they make eye contact. Repeat many times daily.
As your dog reacts easier to the training move around when calling the animal for more of a challenge. Repeat many times daily.
After practicing this training with your pet, try eye contact training indoors off the leash.

Turkey Burgers For Dogs

Dogs love Turkey Burgers! If you're cooking for yourself and want to share a dog-friendly turkey burger this is the recipe for you. Create them any size you want but mini turkey burgers make great snack or a fun treat for your dog at a summer BBQ!

Blue Paw Nation recommends using fresh meat and organic ingredients when possible. This recipe is wheat and gluten free and quick and easy to make. You can vary the recipe but don't put onions in the recipe as it can upset their stomaches.

Turkey Burger Ingredients:

• 8 ounces ground turkey meat
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 2 tablespoons old-fashioned rolled oats
• 2 tablespoons Romano cheese, grated
• 2 tablespoons organic chicken broth, cold

Mix the turkey meat with the beaten egg, minced garlic, rolled oats and grated cheese. Create small or large turkey burger patties.
Cook on a pan or barbeque over medium heat. Lightly spray it with nonstick spray. Grill the burgers 5 minutes on each side.
Serve when COOL enough to handle. Serve directly to your dog or break them apart with a fork and add more chicken broth before serving.

Running with Man's Best Friend

There is nothing like fresh air in your lungs. Breathing in, breathing out; feeling your chest expand and contract with cool, clean oxygen. There is just nothing like it.

I have never been a runner until recently. Last year my husband and I added a new addition to our 2 dog 2 human pack, a little boy named Kellen.

In the past year our 2 dogs have taken a back seat to Kellen's daily needs. The girls have reacted positively to the new human addition, however I have quickly realized that they need to release energy faster than before as my "free" time spent with them is more limited.

1 hour walks and dog park jaunts have been replaced by stroller strides and playgrounds. Running with my pets gives them what they need, a quick release of high energy, and an awesome new bonding activity. It is safe to say Nala, Blue and I get what the "runners high" is and hope for it each day. Before embarking on this awesome adventure with your pet, please read the below and consult your vetrenarian for any potential health risks.

Factors to watch

Age of dog: It is not recommended to run puppies below the age of one for the same reason children are not advised to jog long distances. The impact on joints and growth plates could negatively effect the skeletal system on the animal long term.

Pre disposing injuries: Hip dysplasia and arthritis are two examples of injuries that could be exacerbated with daily pavement jogging.

Temperature: Dogs can overheat very quickly. They maintain body tempreture through their paw pads and by panting. Hydrate your animal frequently, and allow them to swim if possible. If a body of water is not available to you wet your dogs fur before, during, and after a run to help them cool down. During summer months try running on grass or dirt. This will help to keep a cool ground tempreture preventing paw pad burns.

Why Are Omega 3 Supplements Important for Dogs?

Our dog Blue, a Pit/Mastiff mix suffered from double hip dysplasia as a young pup. Consequently she underwent surgery on both hips before turning 1. We have been very happy with the results in the 7 years since the surgery. However arthritis and stiff joints are a natural issue associated with Blue's previous condition and large 90 pound frame. To prevent a serious arthritic condition from developing we follow the following daily regimine.
Daily dog walks, hip massage, and an all natural diet including Omega 3 fatty acid supplements for dogs.

Why Omega 3's?

Omega 3 fatty acids are vital for normal function of every organ system in the body, particularly the immune system. A lack of omega 3s contributes to the following disorders:
*Joint inflammation and arthritis
*Allergy - dry itchy skin, recurring skin infection, recurring ear infections
*Autoimmune disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease
*Loss of mental alertness in older dogs

The Domestic vs. Wild Dog Diet

Old or improperly stored fish oil oxidizes, creating free radicals which are toxic. Pure, fresh fish oil is light in color. It has very little fishy flavor and almost no odor. The pump dispensers used for some veterinary omega oil supplements are easy to use, but oxidize the product. Once opened, fish oil needs to be refrigerated and used within three months. Wipe away excess oil from the lip of the bottle after each use so you don’t accumulate oxidized oil and contaminate the next dose.

Stop Your Puppy From Chewing On Electrical Wires

Chewing electrical wires is a favorite but dangerous hobby for many puppies. Even after your new best friend grows into adulthood they may still find exposed household wires irresistible.

We have listed possible solutions for you below to protect your puppy from harmful electrical wires:

1. Tape cords to the wall with electrical tape to help prevent your pet from gaining access to them.

2. Stow excess lengths of cord behind furniture hidden from your pet's view.

3. Block access to visible cords by wrapping flexible safety cable around them.

4. Place contact paper, sticky side up, in the general area of electrical cords to discourage your pet from approaching them.

5. Apply unpleasant-tasting substances to exposed cords. These could include bitter apple spray, hot-pepper sauce, menthol, toothpaste, mouthwash or lemon juice. Experiment with different flavors, since pets' taste aversions vary.

6. Have favorite toys available to distract your pet from the cords, and rotate toys every few days to prevent boredom.

Dogs and New Babies

We welcomed our 1st child, a boy named Kellen David on March 18, 2010. However like so many other young couples we were already parents of a different kind...

Find out how we handled bringing a new baby home to a house with dogs.

Our 2 first children affectionately called "The Girls" were our 1st babies. They even look like us. Nala is a runt of the litter boxer with a forgetful personality. She forgets to get down off the couch 5 minutes after we tell her for example. Blue is a pit mastiff blend who loves cakes and breads. She is the original Cake Boss.

We were a bit apprehensive when bringing Kellen home as Blue had shown territorial tendencies toward children before. Here is how we handled, and continue to handle the transition.

We had a family member bring Kellens first worn onesie home while we were still in the hospital. The girls were allowed to roll on it, smell it, toss it in the air, etc etc.
We walk the pack all together as often as possible. The stroller leads the family unit to let the dogs know who is in charge.
When we cannot go all together, my husband takes over the daily dog exercising. He walked Blue and Nala every day twice a day for at least 30 minutes as soon as we came home from the hospital.
We claimed everything that belonged to Kellen as ours, not theirs. We did this ala Ceasar Milan by stepping in front of the item calmly but with assertion.
We held the baby and showed as much love to the girls as possible. We are preventing jealousy this way.
We never leave Kellen and the girls alone without supervision. We are careful of his treatment of them as much as their treatment of him.
LOVE YOUR PETS AS MUCH AND AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE!!!!

Dogs Speak When Spoken To

Blue, who inspired Blue Paw Nation dog walking products, continues to inspire and awe!

Dogs have always been more than human companions. When we struggle through life they are excellent confidants and psychologists. I ask my dogs for advice on all subjects and believe it or not the answers always come to me. Proof of their understanding of this dialougue was never so evident to me as when we hired a professional dog sitter to watch our girls, Nala and Blue on a weekend away.

I was a bit apprehensive about allowing Margie, professional dog sitter into my home when I was not there. The major reason why was not because I didn't trust Margie. After all she came recommended to me from my midwife, a woman I trusted my labor to. I met her a few times before going away. We introduced Blue and Nala to Margie off the property as Cesar Milan, famous "Dog Whisperer" instructed. The ladies all seemed to get along splendidly at all of our outings. I still held a bit of anxiety for that first time Margie entered Blue's home without Mom or Dad home. Blue is a Mastiff/Pit Bull mix. She is genetically geared toward protecting her territory with a relentless will, and protect she can! Oh boy.

Knowing Blue's genetic make up, Margie asked if a family member could let her in the first time she arrived. My sister was happy to help. Christina dressed Blue's collar and leash with Margie there inside the home. Christina then left Margie to walk 90 lb Blue first, then 60 lb Nala second, a hyper Boxer. We felt the dogs would get more out of their walks with Margie solo. Along the walk Margie said Blue was pulling to lead fiercely. She pulled all of the dog walking tricks out of her professional hat to prevent this behavior but the force was strong with Blue. Finally, almost exhausted, Margie said out loud, "Blue please stop pulling and walk WITH me!" Guess what happened? That's right, Blue stopped pulling instantly. Margie couldn't believe it. Over the course of the weekend Blue tried to pull on each walk. Margie found that Blue only stopped pulling when Margie spoke to her throughout the walk.

The moral of this story you ask? Speak kindly to your pets as often as you can. They not only understand but they appreciate open lines of communication as much as we do!

a sweet, 180 pound English Mastiff puppy.

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup pumpkin, canned
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 tablespoons Crisco
1 whole egg
1/2 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Combine flour, cinnamon and nutmeg and cut in shortening. Beat egg with milk and pumpkin and combine with flour, mixing well.

Stir until soft dough forms.

Drop by tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool and serve.

To make your dog poop work for you Blue Paw Nation recommends composting. Following are some tips on how to compost your dog's waste.

What You Need To Start a Dog Poop Compost

Recycle an old plastic garbage can with a lid
Gather some rocks or gravel
Purchase a Septic Starter kit (found at your local hardware store)

How To Compost Dog Poop

Choose an area at least 15 feet from your backyard garden to prevent contamination issues

Cut out the bottom of the old plastic garbage can

Cut 10-12 dime to quarter size holes in the sides of the garbage can

Dig a hole deep enough and wide enough for the old plastic garbage can you will use

Place the gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage, then sink the garbage can in the hole leaving about 1” over ground level

Wait 2 days and throw in your poop. No worries, the waste is degrading into the subsoil. Add daily as needed.

Mix flour and cheese together. Add the softened butter. Slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough. You may not need all of the milk. Knead on floured board for a few minutes.

Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into shapes and place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake 350 degrees oven for 15 minutes.

Let cool in oven with the door slightly open till cold and firm.

Refrigerate to keep fresh.

Fresh Breath Biscuits

2 cups brown rice flour
1 Tbl. charcoal
1 large egg slightly beaten
3 Tbl. vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1/3 cup chopped fresh mint
2/3 cup milk

Preheat oven to 400.

Combine flour, salt and charcoal. In a medium bowl, combine egg, oil, parsley and mint; mix well. Slowly stir in flour mixture, then add enough milk to make a dough the consistency of drop biscuits. Drop heaping tablespoons of dough about 1 inch apart onto greased baking sheets.

Bake 15 min., or until firm.

Store cooled biscuits in tightly covered container in refrigerator.

How to Improve Your Parenting Through Training Your Dog

Dog training has many benefits. No more wet spots on the couch, your shoe collection stays in tact, your arm stays in its socket on daily walks just to name a few. However, some of the most important benefits are the ones received by the trainer not the trainee. You see, in reality dog training is an interaction. And in any interaction, all parties involved take something away from the experience. In the case of dog training, the dog does learn appropriate behaviors. A deeper look into why the owner/parent allowed or even cultivated behaviors is where the real parenting lesson lies.

Owners gain insight into their own personality during the training process. They find their weaknesses amplified by their pet and their personality strengths underlined. They may learn that patience is not their natural strength and that training forced them to be more considerate and calm. Alternatively, they may learn their threshold for frustration was actually higher than they had imagined. These lessons, learned through interaction with a dog, are transferable into other segments of one's life. If you are impatient or inconsistent with your dog, chances are you are similar with your child.

For example, the trainer who has successfully worked with a problem dog may find it easier to deal with a difficult child because they have learned that they can be patient and see a situation through without "losing it." A confident parent is certainly an effective parent.

There is of course, the tremendous sense of satisfaction that comes from training a dog to consider, too. Training requires a commitment over time and a willingness to give of oneself a great deal. Sound familiar Mom and Dad? A trainer may reflect on that experience and discover a selfless aspect to their personality of which they had previously been unaware. Tapping into that component of the personality might spur them to undertake other positive activities with their children as well as their pets.

When one realizes they have successfully completed a long-term task, they may better understand their innate ability to set goals and to achieve them by acting consistently with those goals in mind. Dog training can become a great example of what one can accomplish with clear goals in mind. Children, like pets crave structure and love. Children look to a calm patient parent for guidance the same way dogs look to a calm patient leader to head the "pack". If your dog is not responding to your head of household status, a look inward would do a world of good for you children as well.

Training dogs is not just about teaching "sit, heel, and rollover." It is about working with and interacting with another living being over an extended period of time. It is about giving instruction, of course, but it is also about receiving wisdom. There is much more to it, and there is a great deal a trainer can learn from both his dog and the training process itself.

Dog training is more than an exercise in learning and understanding for a dog. It is an exercise in learning and understanding for the master, too. There is a lot parents can learn from our experiences with dog training if we expand our perspective on the matter to include all of the wisdom and understanding acquired throughout the training process.

Samson and Grandma

Letter written to Blue Paw Nation with love by "Arya's Mom"

So..... my grandmother had lived with us for 20 something years taking care of us as we grew up. Now, it was coming time for us to watch after her as she grew old. Our dog Samson was a mix of Black Lab and Pitt Bull, a ridiculously strong animal who needed the strongest leash imaginable when outside for a walk.

Samson was very protective of his house, but little did we know how protective he really was! My dad said that one night he awoke out of his sleep, and he doesn't know why. He went downstairs to where my grandmother (and the dog) slept. He found the back door open and both Samson and my nanny gone! (She was in her early 90's so walking the dog in the middle of the night wasn't a habit of hers!) He went outside to the top of the driveway. In the distance he saw two shadows under the moonlight. One was of a woman clutching something at her side. The other was a pet at her side, looking up at her.

My dad started to walk down the driveway a bit, when Samson must have noticed him. All of a sudden, Samson ran towards my dad, stopped in front of him, then ran back down to my nanny. It was as if the dog wanted to tell my dad something.....I bet it would have been- "Oh thank you! Thank God you're here! I don't know why she wants to go out now, but I was sleeping when I heard her leaving. I couldn't let her go out by herself, as I have watched you take her out so many times before. She just grabbed her pocketbook, barked something then walked out the door. Now quick let's go get her so I can go back to sleep!"

So my dad went down to my grandmother and brought her back inside. According to her, there were strange men who entered the house earlier and that's why she left. If this was true, Samson would have ripped them apart-no doubt! All I can say is thank God for Samson! We live on a main road, and who knows where nanny would have ended up that night!!! What really shocked us was that at any given opportunity during the day (like someone leaving the back door slightly ajar...), Samson would have ran out the door and not come back. He was ALWAYS on a leash when we walked him because we couldn't trust that he would come back.

Has anyone else ever had a strange "thing" happen with their dogs??? They are really remarkable and intuitive animals!

Local Artist Inspires Corporate Donations to the SPCA

My girlfriend Michelle is an excellent artist. She painted a picture of my Grandmother that truly captured the essence of a remarkable 95 year old life in one 8X12 portrait. That is Michelle's day job; accomplished, talented artist. (www.WallWishes.com/portraits.htm) While paint is drying on another beautiful project, Michelle volunteers her time and love at a local New Jersey animal shelter a few hours a week...

She holds the very important role of socializing the dogs and cats to ease their fear when interacting with humans. It is not an easy voluntary role, as the current economy has left animal shelters overcrowded and under resourced. One cannot help leaving the shelter each visit with a heavy heart. I was so inspired by Michelle's weekly act of selflessness that I simply had to pitch in somehow too.

This is what we at Blue Paw Nation came up with...

Each month Blue Paw Nation will team up with a local school or business and sponsor a pet shelter donation drive.
The December, 2009 nonprofit recipient is the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown, NJ. They are currently sheltering 600 cats and 60 dogs solely fueled by donations.
Until January 1, 2010 the drop off location is ITM, 213 Highway 35 North, Middletown, NJ. The drop box is located just in the front door of the building marked "SPCA". Building unlocked from 8-6 Monday-Thursday.

Happiness=Baby Michael, Melvin, and Sunday football ... and e-commerce

Two things happened today that may seem unrelated but I now know better. The first was my website, www.BluePawNation.com, began accepting e-commerce. The second was ...
I came across the photo below on facebook. It is a picture of my brother in law Melvin and his beautiful son Michael.

Melvin has been an influential part of my family since I was a young teenager. Growing up with 3 older sisters, you may even say I adopted him as my big brother without letting him know. Over the years he has taught me so much about life, good character, and determination. I have to say I leave each conversation with Mel a better person. In fact, he is the reason I dedicated some time on a plane ride 2 years ago to simply think and write what came to mind on a blank piece of paper, when all I really wanted to do was watch the in flight movie.

What does the picture of Mel and Michael have to do with e-commerce? Well, the thought process, prompted by Mel, on that plane ride 2 years ago led me to today, November 8, e-commerce entrepreneurship of Blue Paw Nation, llc. Words cannot express how happy I am to have been given such an awesome opportunity. Now look at that smile on Baby Michael's face above. Really, really look at the smile on his face. It is so blissful and care free, and all he is doing is watching football with his dad Mel. That is all he needs to attain that level of happiness.

Not Just Man's Best Friend, but A Marine's Best Friend

I have had my dog for almost 11 years. I can say with a straight face that I am amazed every day at how much I love her. I got married 5 years ago where she had a rocky start with my husband. She retained her spot on the bed, on the couch and wherever she wanted in the house but she never forgave me for complicating our perfect twosome. Thereafter she gave him the indifference treatment. She couldn't care less about his existence.

My husband deployed to Iraq two times with the Marine Corps. He was a machine gunner with an infantry unit. The first deployment lasted 9 mos. and his second one got extended to 11 mos. When he left it was post college for me all over again. Just me and my dog in a daily routine trying to pass time. Kaley and I were completely obsessed with each other...again.

When my husband returned from the second deployment I knew he was going to be different. The number of casualties for his platoon was well into the double digits, quite a few were good friends. I picked him up and all he wanted to do was go home, shower, eat and sleep. I had other reuniting techniques in mind. When we got to the house Kaley was in shock.

I figured that her little world had been shattered, just like when we got married. Not the case. She would not leave his side.


A Marine's Best Friend

I was convinced that he had brought home a highly addictive bag of bones and was keeping them in his pockets. He settled in for a two day sleep and I had to literally lift all 70 lbs. of her dead weight off the bed just to take her outside. Her place was next to him. She sensed his hurt, pain and confusion as he began this hard transition back to civilian life.

Since I had to continue working he was at home for a few weeks with her. He has said many times since that he would not have survived those two weeks without her companionship. It really is amazing to see how she treated him before and how she treats him now. He is God. As you can see by the picture they have an endearingly "disgusting" obsession with each other. She would rather me just leave them alone and make dinner. The tongue out tells it all!!

The BLUE PAW CREW goes to the Zoo

The following is a story of the Blue Paw Crew and their trip to the zoo.

The Blue Paw Crew are Walker, a curious little boy, POE, his protective puppy, and their neighbors Rider, a little girl who loves to explore on her bike, and her smart dog ROE.

"Hi Walker!" Rider and her dog, ROE cycle over to meet the little boy next door, Walker, who is playing with his dog POE in their front yard. "We are on our way to the zoo. Do you want to come with us?" WOOF! WOOF! Can you bark happily like ROE the dog? ROE barks happily. Walker jumps at the invitation, "Sure! And so the Crew skipped off on their adventure... Can you skip like the Blue Paw Crew?

On the way to the zoo, Walker told his friends of his Mothers great advice, "My Mom said that we all have to stay really close at the zoo so we don't lose each other. It gets really crowded!" The crew agreed. While walking around the zoo, the crew saw many different animals doing many awesome things. The craziest thing they saw was a penguin dancing with a big, furry, white polar bear! Dance like the penguin and polar bear! The polar bear was so big, and the penguin, was so small! "How on this beautiful earth did you two meet?" Walker asked. The polar bear started the story of how he met his friend the penguin.

"We both lost our way back in the Arctic. We decided to help each other find our friends, when we saw some nice humans who helped us here to the zoo. We have been the best of friends ever since!" "What is that thing around your waist?" the penguin asked Rider. She responded, "This is my Lil Paw Pack. It holds all my favorite stuff to help me on our adventures! Look, I have a walkie talkie connected to my Mom and Dad, I have my favorite action figure, and my favorite red crayon. Most important I have a card with my parents phone number just in case I lose my way." Pause and discuss what each child would carry with them in their Lil Paw Pack. I have a great idea Walker shouted. Let's give the penguin and polar bear our Lil Paw Packs so you can carry your families phone number! You can use it when you go back to the Arctic, so you will never get lost again!" The penguin and the polar bear strapped on their packs and danced with appreciation. Dance like the penguin and polar bear!

"Wow! Thank you for sharing! Staying together will be easy now!" said the polar bear. "Do you know what won't be easy?" asked the penguin. "What?" said the crew. "Teaching the polar bear to stop stepping on my feet during our dance lesson!" joked the penguin. The crew had a laugh and went home, safely together. Laugh like the Blue Paw Crew!

Swamp Swimming?!?

Good Morning Everyone! I am blogging from the home computer today as my Blackberry took a swim with Nala and Blue on our daily walk. True story...here it goes:

Toby, Blue, Nala and I walked our daily route through the footbridges, watersheds and the swamps...beautiful. I grabbed my Wag Bag today (our plain waist pack with no leash inside) and used our trainer hand held leash.

I stopped to stretch my hip, putting Nala's leash under my foot, except Blue and Toby kept going...and so did Nala. She ran to catch them, caught a glimpse of some ducks in the swamp, and against her normally rational judgement (haha), lept into the swamp.

Toby followed to help her out as the diving point of choice was a one foot drop into the water with no solid bed to get back out of. Think in-ground pool with no stairs. Not good. As Toby pulled Nala out, Blue wanted to join in the swimming fun and she too jumped in. My maternal instincts kicked in and guess what I did??? I JUMPED IN TOO!!! I pushed Blue's bum up, Toby pulled her paws out, and the family was safe and sound with an adventure to blog about, and some foul swampy smelling clothes and fur to prove it.
